Herd Share 101
Raw Milk and Herd Share FAQ’s
Herd Share
-
In a herd share, you purchase interest in the herd, similar to purchasing stock in a company. You then pay Tarullo Family Farm & Dairy a monthly boarding fee for the care and feeding of your percentage of the herd. In return, you receive a percentage of raw milk produced by your share of the herd.
Our structure is one share = 1 gallon of milk weekly. In some herd shares the amount of milk you receive may fluctuate. We’ve taken careful measures to ensure our structure accommodates drops in production.
-
We have both ½ and full shares available.
½ Share
Initial bill of sale for interest in the herd is $25
Monthly boarding fees are $35/month and provides ½ gallon of raw milk per week.
Full Share
Initial bill of sale for interest in the herd is $50
1 Full Share costs $65/month and provides 1 gallon of raw milk per week.
Mix & Match
You have the option to purchase variations of shares if your family needs more milk. For example, some families chose 1 ½ shares. This would mean an initial purchase of interest of $75, and a per month boarding fee of $110. In turn, they will receive 1 ½ gallons of milk per week.

No. In the state of Texas, it is illegal to sell raw milk for human consumption unless you are a licensed Grade A Dairy. Even then, there are certain regulations on those sales. Herd share owners are not purchasing milk; they are paying a boarding fee for the care and boarding of their interest in the herd and are receiving milk produced by that share of the herd.

Yes! We have a milk parlor where our cows are milked daily. Our milking process is as follows:
Once in the milking stanchion, our cows are brushed down to remove any loose hair, dirt, or debris on their coat and udder. This is also an opportunity for us to do a daily visual assessment of each animal.
Next, we clean the udder using warm water mixed with castile soap and vinegar. We never dip a used rag into our wash bucket again. Each pass of the udder is with a new rag to ensure cleanliness.
We then express 2-3 squirts of milk from each teat to clean out any milk left in the teat canal.
After the first few squirts are expelled, we test for bacterial count to ensure there is no underlying infection and that the milk is safe and healthy to consume.
Now we milk!
Our milk handling process is as follows:
Milk is filtered and bottled immediately. We then place it into our near-freezing refrigerator to be chilled. Our milk is chilled to 35 degrees F within an hour of being collected.
All of our milking equipment is broken down and cleaned after each milking. We do a major deep clean every week.
-
Our cows are moved to fresh pasture daily. Their diet is almost exclusively grass. We also provide free-choice hay in the summer and winter to ensure they always have access to healthy forage.
While being milked our cows receive a pre-measured amount of homemade dairy ration. This ration consists of organic alfalfa, organic barley, organic whole oats in hulls, organic black oil sunflower seeds, organic field peas, organic sunflower meal, and organic beet pulp. They also receive a mineral topper of kelp, calcium, phosphorus, and a mineral conditioner.
Our priority is animal health over milk production. We believe in sourcing the highest quality ingredients we can find, and never feed our cows corn, soy, or GMOs. We yield less milk than our competitors, and we’re okay with that because we believe pushing the cows to the limit isn’t in their best interest.

Raw Milk
-
Raw milk is milk that has not been pasteurized or homogenized. It comes straight from the cow. Because it's not processed like other milk, raw milk retains its natural enzymes, beneficial bacteria, and fat structure.
-
Some people choose raw milk for the following:
Natural enzymes
Beneficial bacteria
Rich flavor
Minimal processing
To learn more about raw milk, we recommend the following resources:
-
Raw milk typically lasts 7-10 days when kept refrigerated. Many customers find that it stays fresh longer due to its natural enzymes.
-
We think it does! Raw milk often has a richer, creamier flavor that reflects the cow’s diet and the season.
-
We take safety extremely seriously. Our family drinks the same milk you do, and our practice include:
Clean milking procedures
Regular equipment sanitation
Rapid chilling of milk
Healthy, well-cared-for animals
That said, raw milk is not pasteurized, and consumers should educate themselves and make informed decisions.
